COMMANDER HALBERT DOOLEY?
As the first astronaut to attempt to circumnavigate the moon, Commander Halbert Dooley's place in the history of space exploration was cemented when he blasted off from Kennedy Space Centre in November, 1968. But as everybody knows, that milestone ultimately went to Frank Boorman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders when Commander Dooley passed into the luna shadow, never to be heard from again.
Some say that Commander Dooley's luna orbit was too shallow, placing his capsule within the moon's gravitation pull, and drawing him into a catastrophic crash landing. Others theorise that the orbit was not shallow enough, shooting him past the moon where he continued his journey into the cold, black emptiness of space.
The one thing we do know is that it was shortly before he passed behind the moon and into radio silence that he sent his final transmission. Inspired by the sight of the small blue planet all humanity called home, he made an impassioned plea to his fellow man...
